Pastéis de Belém

Pastéis de Belém the way they are meant to be had... Fresh!!!

Pastéis de Belém is the original recipe for the amazing pastry known as pastéis de nata. Let me just explain that only those that come from this shop are called Pastéis de Belém. The pastry shop and café have been around since 1837. This pastry is a very delicious custard tart and powdered with a little icing sugar and cinnamon. Luckily I was given a personal tour since my uncle is the facility manager and an engineer of sorts for all things mechanical. Each one of the pastry shells is hand made by a group of women around a table. These women can effortlessly make the shells in a matter of seconds. The custard itself is a secret recipe which I obviously can’t share with you but it was cool learning the ins and outs of the production. If you are ever at a Portuguese pastry shop you can’t go wrong with an order of pastéis de nata.
